Letter paper processing technology is the extension and development of traditional paper-making technology, that is, making the traditional hand-made paper into processed paper with special function through some processes, in order to improve the practicability of paper, prolong the life of paper, make paper more suitable for writing, painting and printing. The processed paper were widely used in imperial edicts, memorials, official documents, letters of the people in Chinese history. In addition, a large number of literatures and calligraphy works and paintings of celebrities are relied on it to be handed down.
The processing steps of letter papers include mixture of raw materials, dyeing, coating, mounting, drawing, decorating with gold flake, polishing, paper cutting, engraving, woodblock overprint, Gonghua printing, rubbing, and clipping. Different processed papers need to use different processing technology, but generally, varieties of traditional processing paper can be derived from the combination and comprehensively use of one or two, or more of paper processing techniques. 
The paper processing technology in China has a long history, which first appeared in the Eastern Han Dynasty. The paper processing techniques of waxed letter paper, waxed and powdered letter paper, gold-dusted letter paper appeared in the Tang Dynasty were exquisite and meticulous, which laid a foundation for the development of paper processing techniques in the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. In the middle of Qing Dynasty, Xuan paper of Jingxian County had gradually replaced Xuande paper. Since then, the processing technology of paper had reached its peak. From the late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China, paper industry and processing technology were gradually disappeared. When the People's Republic of China was founded, the paper processing technology was on the verge of extinction. After the reform and opening up, Chaohu’s Tuoyingxuan Stationery Factory is committed to the study of this ancient art, and restoring some famous products lost for hundreds of years. However, how to protect and inherit the paper processing technology after recovery is still a big problem. Letter paper processing technology was included in the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage project list, and Liu Jing is the national inheritor of this skill. Its protection and development has great practical significance for enriching people's material and cultural life, flourishing cultural market and promoting the development of painting and calligraphy art market.
